CSCS Card Types and Meanings — All Colours Explained

Complete guide to every CSCS card colour, what each one means and the requirements to get one

Overview of CSCS Card Types

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) uses a colour-coded card system to identify the competence level of every worker on a UK construction site. Each card colour corresponds to a specific level of qualification, allowing site managers and security to quickly verify that workers hold the appropriate credentials for their role.

There are seven main CSCS card types, each with distinct requirements. Understanding the card system is essential whether you are new to construction or looking to progress your career. Below is a detailed breakdown of every card type, its colour, meaning and what you need to qualify.

Green Card — Labourer

The Green CSCS card is the most common entry-level card in the construction industry. It is designed for general labourers who need site access but do not hold a trade-specific NVQ qualification.

Green Card Requirements

What Can You Do With a Green Card?

The Green card allows you to work on construction sites as a general labourer. Typical roles include site labourer, hod carrier, groundworker (without NVQ), and general operative. CSCS encourages Green cardholders to progress to a Blue Skilled Worker card by completing a relevant NVQ Level 2 within the five-year validity period.

Cost: £22.50 (HS&E test) + £100–200 (Level 1 Award) + £36 (card) = approximately £160–260 total

Blue Card — Skilled Worker

The Blue CSCS card is the standard card for qualified tradespeople who have completed their training and hold a nationally recognised qualification in their trade.

Blue Card Requirements

Trades Covered by the Blue Card

The Blue card covers a wide range of construction trades including bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation, plastering, painting and decorating, roofing, tiling, scaffolding, steelfixing, formwork, dry lining, floor laying and many more. Each trade has its own specific NVQ qualification.

See our Green vs Blue card comparison for details on upgrading from Green to Blue.

Gold Card — Advanced Craft / Supervisory

The Gold CSCS card is for workers with advanced qualifications who typically hold supervisory responsibilities on site. This card covers two distinct groups: advanced craftspeople and site supervisors.

Gold Card Requirements

Typical Gold cardholders include site supervisors, general foremen, trade foremen and highly skilled craftspeople. For a full guide, see our Gold card application page.

Black Card — Manager

The Black CSCS card is the highest-level card for construction managers and senior professionals. It demonstrates both technical knowledge and management capability.

Black Card Requirements

Black cardholders include site managers, project managers, contracts managers, construction directors, health and safety managers and quantity surveyors with management responsibilities.

White Card — Professionally Qualified Person (PQP)

The White CSCS card is reserved for chartered professionals who are members of a CSCS-approved professional institution. It is the academic equivalent of the Black Manager card.

Approved Professional Bodies

Applicants must hold chartered status (not just membership) and pass the MAP test. The application is typically made through the professional body rather than directly through CSCS.

Red Card — Provisional / Trainee

The Red CSCS card is a temporary, short-term card for workers who are registered for or have recently completed a relevant construction qualification but are waiting for their certificate.

Key Facts About the Red Card

⚠ Important

The Red Provisional card is not renewable. If it expires before you have obtained your full qualification, you will not be able to get another Red card. Plan your NVQ timeline carefully to ensure you can progress to a Green, Blue or Gold card within 6 months.

Purple Card — Visitor

The Purple CSCS card is for non-operative visitors who need temporary site access but will not be carrying out any construction work. This includes clients, architects conducting inspections, surveyors and other professionals visiting the site.

No construction qualifications or HS&E test are required for a Visitor card. The card is typically arranged by the site management team and may be issued on a daily or project basis.
