About CSCS Practice

Our Mission

CSCS Practice exists to make quality CSCS test preparation freely available to every construction worker in the United Kingdom. The CSCS scheme covers the UK’s 2.4 million construction workers, and passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is a mandatory step for anyone seeking to work on a construction site. Each year, hundreds of thousands of workers sit the test for the first time or as a renewal.

While the test itself costs £22.50 — a modest, necessary fee — many commercial revision resources charge £20 to £50 for access to practice question banks. We believe that no construction worker should face a paywall when trying to prepare for a test that exists to protect them and their colleagues on site. CSCS Practice provides comprehensive, accurate, and genuinely useful revision materials at no cost whatsoever.

We are particularly committed to reaching workers earlier in their careers — apprentices, new entrants to the trades, and those returning to construction after a break — for whom the cost of commercial revision apps can be a real barrier. Our site works on any device with a web browser, requires no app download, and needs no account or registration.

What We Offer

CSCS Practice provides over 255 free practice questions across three full mock tests and five topic-specific quizzes, covering every subject area of the CSCS HS&E test:

• CSCS Operatives Test — 50 Questions
  A full mock test mirroring the format of the real Operatives HS&E test. 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes, with a 90% pass mark (45/50). Covers the breadth of topics assessed in the real test: working at height, manual handling, PPE, fire safety, COSHH, noise and vibration, electrical safety, excavations, asbestos awareness, and behavioural case studies.
• CSCS Specialists Test — 50 Questions
  50 practice questions covering the additional specialist topics assessed in the Specialist Occupations HS&E test. Includes demolition safety, confined space working, highway maintenance, tunnelling hazards, and specialist trade-specific questions relevant to plumbers, electricians, scaffolders, and demolition workers.
• CSCS Managers & Professionals Test — 50 Questions
  50 practice questions aligned with the Managers and Professionals HS&E test, which carries a higher pass mark of 92% (46/50). Covers CDM 2015, risk assessment methodology, Construction Phase Plans, permit-to-work systems, site management responsibilities, and legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
• General Health & Safety Quiz — 30 Questions
  A 30-question quiz covering the breadth of construction health and safety topics, suitable as a warm-up before a full mock test or as a quick revision check.
• Working at Height — 25 Questions
  A focused quiz on the Work at Height Regulations 2005, covering the hierarchy of controls, safe use of ladders and stepladders, scaffolding inspection requirements, mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs), edge protection systems, and personal fall arrest equipment.
• Manual Handling — 25 Questions
  25 questions on the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, the TILE assessment method (Task, Individual, Load, Environment), safe lifting technique, the use of mechanical aids, and team lifting procedures.
• PPE Questions — 25 Questions
  25 questions on the PPE at Work Regulations 2022, covering hard hats, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protective equipment (RPE). Includes questions on correct selection, fitting, inspection, and replacement of PPE.
• Fire Safety — 25 Questions
  25 questions on fire prevention and control, including the fire triangle, types of fire extinguisher and their colour codes, hot works permit systems, fire classes (A through F), evacuation procedures, assembly points, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

How Our Practice Tests Work

Every test on CSCS Practice is designed to replicate the real CITB HS&E test experience as closely as possible:

• Multiple-choice format with four answer options (A, B, C, D), matching the real test format exactly
• Randomised question order every time you start or restart, ensuring you are tested differently on each attempt
• Immediate feedback after each question — correct answers are highlighted in green, incorrect choices in red, with a detailed explanation of the right answer and the principle it tests
• Progress tracking with a visual progress bar showing how far through the test you are
• Optional timer to help you practise within the real 45-minute time limit for Operatives and Specialists, and 55 minutes for Managers

Alongside the interactive tests, each topic page includes a substantial educational article — typically 800 to 1,200 words — explaining the underlying legislation, regulations, and practical principles in plain language. Understanding the “why” behind safety rules is more valuable than simply memorising correct answers, both for passing the test and for working safely on site.
