When to Renew Your CSCS Card
Most CSCS cards are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. You should begin the renewal process at least 3 months before your card expires to allow time to:
- Retake the HS&E test if your previous pass has expired (test passes are valid for 2 years)
- Ensure your qualifications are still registered on the CSCS system
- Process and receive your new card (approximately 10 working days)
CSCS sends renewal reminders by post approximately 3 months before your card expires. Make sure your address is up to date on the CSCS system.
CSCS Card Renewal Cost
| Item | Cost | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Card Renewal Fee | £36 | Yes — always required |
| HS&E Test | £22.50 | Yes, if your last test pass is more than 2 years old |
| Total | £36–58.50 |
If you passed the HS&E test within the last 2 years, you only need to pay the £36 renewal fee. If your test pass has expired, you must retake the test first (£22.50), bringing the total to £58.50.
How to Renew Online — Step by Step
- Check your HS&E test validity — your test pass must be less than 2 years old. If it has expired, book and pass the test before proceeding.
- Log into your CSCS account at cscs.uk.com (or create one if you do not have one)
- Confirm your qualifications are still registered on the system. If you have gained additional qualifications since your last card, you may be eligible for a higher card type.
- Upload a new photograph if required (passport-style, recent, clear, plain background)
- Confirm your personal details (address, contact information)
- Pay the £36 renewal fee by debit or credit card
- Receive your new card within approximately 10 working days
What Happens If Your Card Expires?
If your CSCS card expires before you renew it:
- You cannot use the expired card to access construction sites
- Most sites will refuse entry to anyone with an expired CSCS card
- There is no penalty or additional fee for late renewal — the process and cost are the same
- You will need a valid HS&E test pass (less than 2 years old) to renew
- Your qualifications must still be registered on the CSCS system
If your card expires and you do not have a new one, you may be unable to work on construction sites. This can result in lost income. Start the renewal process 3 months early to ensure continuity. If you need to retake the HS&E test, book it at least 6 weeks before your card expires.
Renewal Requirements by Card Type
| Card Type | Renewal Requirements | HS&E Test Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Green (Labourer) | Level 1 Award still registered + valid HS&E test pass | Operatives |
| Blue (Skilled Worker) | NVQ Level 2 still registered + valid HS&E test pass | Operatives or Specialists |
| Gold (Supervisor) | NVQ Level 3+ still registered + valid HS&E test pass | MAP |
| Black (Manager) | NVQ Level 6/7 still registered + valid HS&E test pass | MAP |
| White (PQP) | Chartered status confirmed by professional body + valid HS&E test pass | MAP |
| Red (Provisional) | Cannot be renewed — must progress to full card | N/A |
Upgrading Your Card at Renewal
Renewal is a good time to consider whether you are eligible for a higher-level card. If you have gained additional qualifications since your last card was issued, you may be able to upgrade:
- Green to Blue — if you have completed an NVQ Level 2 in your trade
- Blue to Gold — if you have completed an NVQ Level 3 or supervisory qualification
- Gold to Black — if you have completed an NVQ Level 6/7 or equivalent management qualification
To upgrade, simply apply for the higher card type during the renewal process. Your qualifications must be registered on the CSCS system and you must hold the appropriate HS&E test pass.
Lost or Stolen Cards
If your CSCS card is lost or stolen before its expiry date:
- Apply for a replacement card through the CSCS website
- The replacement fee is £36
- You do not need to retake the HS&E test for a replacement (only for renewal)
- The replacement card will have the same expiry date as your original card
Renewing by Post
While online renewal is faster, you can also renew by post. Download the renewal form from the CSCS website, complete it, attach a new passport photograph and send it with a cheque or postal order for £36 to the CSCS office. Postal renewals take 15–20 working days.
