CSCS Gold Card — Supervisor & Advanced Craft Guide

Complete guide to the Gold CSCS card: requirements, NVQ Level 3, MAP test, application and career progression

What Is the CSCS Gold Card?

The CSCS Gold card is for construction workers with advanced qualifications, typically those in supervisory roles or with higher-level trade qualifications. It is one of the most sought-after CSCS cards because it demonstrates both technical expertise and the competence to oversee the work of others.

The Gold card covers two categories:

Gold Card Requirements

Gold Supervisory Card

The most common Gold card is the Supervisory variant. Requirements include:

  1. NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or above in a construction supervisory discipline, such as:
    • NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision
    • NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations (Supervisory)
    • NVQ Level 3 in Construction Site Supervision
  2. CITB MAP HS&E test pass (Managers and Professionals test)
    • 50 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 46/50 (92%)
    • Cost: £22.50
  3. Card application fee of £36

Many employers also require (or strongly recommend) the CITB SSSTS (Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme) certificate alongside the NVQ. SSSTS is a 2-day course covering the legal responsibilities of site supervisors.

Gold Advanced Craft Card

For advanced tradespeople (non-supervisory), requirements are:

  1. NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or above in a specific construction trade (e.g. advanced bricklaying, advanced carpentry, advanced plastering)
  2. Operatives, Specialists or MAP HS&E test pass (depending on the specific occupation — check with CSCS)
  3. Card application fee of £36

What Can You Do With a Gold Card?

The Gold CSCS card qualifies you for supervisory and advanced craft roles on construction sites:

Gold cardholders typically earn significantly more than Blue cardholders, with supervisory roles commanding £35,000–55,000+ per year depending on the sector and region.

The MAP Test

The MAP (Managers and Professionals) test is required for the Gold Supervisory card. It is more challenging than the Operatives test:

How to Get a Gold Card — Step by Step

  1. Check your eligibility — do you hold, or are you working towards, an NVQ Level 3 in a construction discipline?
  2. Complete the NVQ Level 3 if not already held. Many providers offer on-site assessment, allowing you to gain the qualification while working. Ask your employer about funded training.
  3. Consider the SSSTS course — while not always mandatory for the card, the CITB Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme is highly valued and often required by employers.
  4. Pass the MAP HS&E test — book through citb.co.uk and practice with our MAP practice test.
  5. Apply for the Gold card at cscs.uk.com. Your NVQ must be registered on the CSCS system by the awarding body.
  6. Receive your card — approximately 10 working days after approval.

Career Progression

The Gold card is a stepping stone in the CSCS career pathway:

Frequently Asked Questions

An NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or above in a construction discipline (or equivalent supervisory qualification), a pass in the MAP HS&E test (£22.50), and the £36 card fee. Some roles also require SSSTS certification.
Both are Gold cards. Advanced Craft is for highly skilled tradespeople with NVQ Level 3 in their trade. Supervisory is for site supervisors and foremen with NVQ Level 3 in a supervisory discipline. The qualification requirements differ but both cards are the same colour and level.
For the Supervisory card, yes — the MAP test is required (pass mark 46/50). For Advanced Craft (non-supervisory), you may need the Operatives or Specialists test depending on your trade. Check with CSCS.
£36 for the card plus £22.50 for the MAP test. If you need an NVQ Level 3, add £1,000–3,000. SSSTS is £250–400 if required. Total if NVQ already held: £58.50.
Yes. Complete an NVQ Level 3 or supervisory qualification and pass the MAP test, then apply for the Gold card. Many workers progress from Blue to Gold through on-site NVQ assessment while working in a supervisory role.
