How to Revise for the CSCS Test
The CSCS HS&E test has a demanding pass mark of 90% (45/50) for Operatives and 92% (46/50) for Managers. This means you can only afford to get 4–5 questions wrong. Proper revision is essential — even experienced construction workers can fail without preparation.
This guide covers all the best revision resources, from free online tools to recommended books, and provides a structured study plan to help you pass first time.
Recommended CSCS Revision Books
For Operatives and Specialists
- “Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives and Specialists” — Published by CITB, updated annually. This is the official revision book and the single most important resource. It covers every topic in the real test with practice questions and clear explanations. Available from Amazon, WHSmith and the CITB shop. Price: approximately £15–20.
- “CSCS Revision Notes” by various authors — Condensed study guides that summarise the key facts. Useful as a quick-reference supplement alongside the official book.
For Managers and Professionals (MAP)
- “Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals” — Published by CITB. The MAP equivalent of the operatives book, with additional content on CDM 2015, legislation and management responsibilities. Price: approximately £15–20.
The official CITB revision book is the closest thing to a guaranteed pass. The real test questions are based on the same material. If you only buy one thing, make it the CITB book for your test type.
